Songs of Wonder is a Musical Tribute to Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel-featuring acclaimed singer and musician Basya Schechter. In setting the Yiddush poetry of the revered Jewish philosopher and civil rights activist, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, to music, Basya Schechter has created a rich new collection of Yiddish songs with a contemporary touch. This exciting project blends Basya’s lovely voice, Heschel’s powerful poetry, and some of the finest musicians in the NYC Downtown Jewish Music Scene. What better place than to hear his music than in the synagogue where Heschel often spoke.

Tickets: $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Call 800-838-3006 for tickets

The “KI Kwilters” needlework group invites you to come and make a matzah cover for Passover on February 26th, 3-5pm. It can be whatever you want it to be. We will be teaching a basic design, but feel free to let your creativity soar. If you don’t want to make a matzah cover or challah cover you might choose to make a bib. See patterns below.

When? – Sunday, February 26, 2012, 3-5 pm,

Where? – Novakoff Hall, Kehillath Israel

What’s Happening? – Joyce Graff, Fran Pechenick, and Rabbi Rachel will be helping beginners accomplish one basic matzah cover or bib in this two hours. It’s your project, to take home with you. You should be able to complete one matzah cover or bib during the session.

What should I prepare? – choose a pattern, bring fabric for your project, or we will have some fabric on hand for you to choose from. See the supplies list with each pattern. We will have sewing machines and irons to share, and basic cutting and sewing supplies. Bring your own if you prefer.

Pattern #1 – Basic matzah cover

You will need pieces of two or three fabrics. A and B could be the same color if you want to limit it to two colors. D (the lining fabric) can repeat one of the others or be different, as you choose.

Color A – you will need two pieces, each 6 ½ inches square. This is your “focal fabric”, the one that will be most prominent in the design. (Buy ¼ yard)

Color B – you will need one piece 30 inches by 3 inches. (Buy 1/8 yard)

Color C – you will need one piece 30 inches by 3 inches. (Buy 1/8 yard)

Color D – Lining. Traditionally white, but do your own thing. You will need four pieces 13 inches square. (Buy ½ yard).

If you are an advanced needleworker and want to decorate your design side in a different way, the completed design side should be 12 ½ inches square. Bring your design side and lining (color D) and assemble it with us.

Pattern #2 – Bib
Print the pattern at: http://www.newconceptions.com/patpdf/MasterBibs.pdf

For beginners: Choose Bib style A or B, and do not cut the fabric at home.

You will need ½ yard of material to make it all one color, or add a contrasting color for the pocket, 8” x 11”. You will NOT need the bias tape (we’ll show you an easier method), and we will supply velcro dots for you.

You can make the bib reversible (1/2 yard of each of two fabrics will make two bibs!)

You can decorate the bib any way you wish. Remember that you may be scrubbing mashed prunes out of the decoration, so don’t go crazy.
