KI began meeting as a congregation in 1910. By 1917 Congregation Kehillath Israel became a formal religious organization. After much fund raising, the cornerstone for our beloved Sanctuary was laid on June 11th, 1922 at which time it was the first synagogue being built in Brookline. Assistant Attorney General Albert Hurwitz presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. In his speech he said he was happy to see that the new project was to be a community center and school as well as a house of worship. That vision has been realized in what KI is today.
