Pointing us toward our True-East
When we feel lost, we seek to orient ourselves. For many, this involves looking for our true-north. For our people, we turn our hearts to the east, toward Israel.
We rise each morning uncertain about what the new day will bring. And, we’re blessed to not have to face the new day alone.
Morning minyan has long been a spiritual staple of KI’s prayer community. This is never more true and necessary than it is today. Dedicated lay-leaders sculpt and mold a community of prayer to greet each day with comfort and courage.
One such leader, particularly over the past few years, is Leann Shamash. Every Wednesday morning, she nourishes our inner-lives with original poetry. Hundreds of selections by now can be found where she collects and shares them on a site called Words Have Wings
This morning’s selection is particularly timely. Watch it below.
KI is blessed with an extraordinary community made up of gifted and giving individuals like Leann. We support and care for each other when it matters most. We look forward to being present for each other in the difficult days and weeks to come.
Two additional items for today:
Many of you continue to ask where to target your support. Here is a direct way to respond to the Kibbutz Kfar Azza, when reporters were brought yesterday to learn of the slaughter that Hamas perpetrated there. Through Or Ohanna, founder of Bakey now co-locating with us on our Campus, we’re eager to share a reliably helpful link that will enable you to be of direct support to this Kibbutz as they struggle to cope with and contain their anguish.
Also, I hope to see many parents (all are welcome) on tonight’s zoom visit at 7:45 pm, when we’ll address How to talk to our kids.
Finally, a word about our True-East, our people’s homeland. The Hebrew word for east is mizrach, which points us toward Jerusalem whenever we do something important, like pray. And, of course, it’s also where the sun rises. May we lift each other together, rising to shoulder and meet the challenges that tomorrow will bring.
Am Yisrael Chai,
Rabbi William Hamilton
