Erev Rosh Hashanah
Light festival candles at home with two blessings, l’hadlik ner shel yom tov and shehechiyanu, no later than 6:22PM. It is customary to light a long-burning or yahrzeit candle as well (without a blessing) so fire will be available to transfer for additional lighting.
Recite Kiddush for Rosh Hashana. After Hamotzi blessing, we dip challah into honey (rather than salt) for a sweet new year.
Dipping an apple slice in honey, we make the blessing borei p’re ha-etz and the wish yehi ratzon milfanecha Adonai eloheinu v’elohei avotinu she-techadesh aleinu shana tova umetukah (May it be Your will, our God, that the New Year will be renewed for us with goodness and sweetness).
2nd Night of Rosh Hashana:
Rosh Hashana is considered by the sages to be a 48-hour single-unit of time, one long day, but we wait for the first day to end at 7:21PM before lighting candles for the second day. Light candles with two blessings, l’hadlik ner shel yom tov, and shehechiyanu, this time from a transferred flame. Recite Kiddush for Rosh Hashana.
Many eat a new fruit or a special food that you have not eaten for the past year or since it was last in season, to make sure that the shehechiyanu blessing is truly over something new.
Some families engage in a (brief!) Rosh Hashana seder, making puns over special foods to bring wishes for blessing for the new year.
From all of us at KI, we wish you and yours a healthy, sweet, and peaceful 5786.
